Apple’s upcoming iPhone Duo shows the company’s long‑standing strategy of putting product quality ahead of being first to market. Understanding why the launch was delayed helps us see how Apple’s engineering choices shape future devices.
Foldable smartphones have been sold since 2018. The Royole FlexPai appeared in November 2018, followed by Samsung’s Galaxy Fold in September 2019, and later models from Huawei, Motorola, Honor, Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus.
Apple delayed its foldable phone because flexible displays must survive repeated mechanical stress around the hinge. This durability issue is a major engineering challenge that the company did not want to overlook.
Another problem Apple wanted to fix is the visible crease that runs across many existing foldable screens. Apple has combined new display technology with hardware improvements to make the crease less noticeable, following its philosophy of waiting until weaknesses are solved.
In short, Apple’s decision to wait reflects its belief that a foldable iPhone should meet high standards for durability and visual quality before it reaches consumers. The company’s focus on solving these problems may set the tone for future foldable devices.
