Food on the table is becoming more expensive for many families, and the reasons behind the rise are linked to global events. Understanding these forces helps you see why your grocery bill may be climbing.
Muhamad Yasin, a 63‑year‑old parking attendant in central Jakarta, says rice in Indonesia rose from 7,000‑8,000 rupiah per kilo to 15,000 rupiah. He now cuts meals because he earns only 200,000‑300,000 rupiah a week.
The report says global food inflation is poised to accelerate in the coming months because war‑related shipping disruptions and El Nino‑driven drought are squeezing cereal supplies. Freight rates on key routes such as the Black Sea to Southeast Asia have risen about 50%, and Indonesian wheat arrivals fell 41% in September, worsening supply shortages.
In other regions, staple prices are also jumping. The article notes that bread prices in Egypt have risen by about a quarter, while sugar prices in India have hit all‑time highs. According to the World Bank, food price inflation outpaced headline inflation in 22% of the 150 countries it analysed in the September quarter.
These trends show that supply shocks are turning into higher costs for basic foods, hitting low‑income households the hardest. The key takeaway is that global events are directly squeezing everyday consumers’ budgets.
