Ho Chi Minh City is seeing a sharp increase in money sent home by overseas workers, and the boost is directly linked to the city’s fiscal plans. Understanding this link helps explain how jobs, services and future projects may be funded.
Remittances to Ho Chi Minh City reached US$2.835 billion in Q3 2026, up 39.5 % from the previous quarter and 3.6 % year‑on‑year, the State Bank of Vietnam’s Region 2 Branch said, according to Sai Gon Giai Phong. It was the first quarter with positive year‑on‑year growth after declines of 16.9 % in Q1 and 27.9 % in Q2.
Ho Chi Minh City aims to collect more than VND1 quadrillion (about $38.6 billion) in state budget revenue in 2026, a goal that underpins its plan for double‑digit economic growth, the Vietnam News Agency reported. The large inflow of remittances adds a significant source of cash that can be counted toward this target.
In the final three months of 2026, the city must gather over VND333 trillion ($12.8 billion), roughly VND110 trillion ($4.2 billion) each month, according to the Vietnam News Agency. This monthly pace is notably higher than the average recorded in the first nine months, indicating a tighter fiscal schedule as the year ends.
The surge in remittances therefore plays a direct role in helping Ho Chi Minh City meet its ambitious revenue goals and sustain its double‑digit growth ambition. Monitoring these flows will be key to understanding the city’s future fiscal health.
