Vietnam may face a super‑typhoon as strong as Yagi every seven years if global temperatures rise 4 °C, according to the country’s 2025 Climate Change Scenario. Understanding this risk helps people plan for safety, work and community readiness.
The 2025 Climate Change Scenario was released by Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. For the first time it evaluates extreme events at 1.5 °C, 2 °C, 3 °C and 4 °C warming thresholds, giving policymakers a scientific basis for planning.
The scenario says that if global warming reaches 4 °C, Vietnam could experience a Yagi‑strength super typhoon on average once every seven years. In the same 4 °C case, northern Vietnam would see such storms about every 13 years, central Vietnam every 16 years, and southern Vietnam only about every 133 years.
A high‑emissions pathway in the scenario projects more than 50 additional hot days each year and a 30‑40 % increase in maximum daily rainfall. These changes raise the overall disaster risk, meaning more frequent flooding and heat stress.
Super Typhoon Yagi struck northern Vietnam on 7 September 2024, causing the worst natural disaster in half a century. The storm produced wind levels up to 14 on Vietnam’s scale, gusts to level 17, historic flooding, flash floods and landslides.
Together, the projected rise in super‑typhoon frequency and the extra heat and rain suggest that daily life in Vietnam could become more vulnerable to extreme weather. Preparing infrastructure, emergency plans and community awareness will be essential to reduce future impacts.
