A sudden, burn‑like rash can appear overnight in Vietnam, and the hidden cause is often a tiny rove beetle. Knowing how the insect works and how to react can protect you from painful skin irritation.
Dr. Nguyen Huu Truong, deputy director of the clinical allergy and immunology centre at Bach Mai Hospital, explains that rove beetles (genus Paederus) do not bite, but when they are crushed they release a toxin called pederin. The toxin causes irritant contact dermatitis that looks like a burn.
According to dermatologist Dr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, the skin lesions usually develop 12‑48 hours after contact. They appear as red streaks or blisters and, as Dr. Thanh notes, the condition is not contagious.
Dr. Truong adds that the insects are drawn to artificial lights and often enter homes during the rainy season, after storms, or during rice harvests when their natural habitats are disturbed. Even apartments on higher floors are not safe from these light‑attracted beetles.
Both doctors advise never to slap or rub a beetle on the skin. Instead, gently blow the insect away or lift it with a piece of paper, then wash the area with clean water and mild soap without scrubbing, and avoid scratching or popping any blisters.
In July 2024 Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital treated an average of 50‑70 patients each day for rove‑beetle dermatitis, highlighting how common the problem can be. Staying alert and following simple steps can greatly reduce the risk.
