Malaysia’s national oil and gas company PETRONAS is stepping up cooperation with Vietnam on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and clean‑energy projects. The move comes as countries in Southeast Asia look for more reliable energy sources and steadier prices.
Aimy Zairin Mohamed, PETRONAS Vietnam’s representative, said energy security has become a priority for many nations because of global uncertainties, especially the conflict in the Middle East. Military tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran have disrupted fuel supplies, affecting about 20 % of the world’s oil that passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Last week PETRONAS and Vietnam National Industry‑Energy Group (Petrovietnam) signed a strategic alliance to broaden cooperation in oil and gas exploration, production, downstream operations and low‑carbon energy solutions. Aimy noted that PETRONAS brings more than 40 years of LNG experience, geographic advantages and flexible supply capabilities, which it will use to help Vietnam strengthen its energy security.
The two companies also plan to work on carbon capture and storage, a technology still new to the region. In addition, PETRONAS is joining a Vietnam‑Malaysia‑Singapore power interconnection project that will transmit renewable electricity generated in Vietnam to Malaysia, Singapore and other regional markets. Vietnam’s strong wind resources are expected to feed this green power.
Together, the LNG expertise, clean‑power links and new technologies aim to protect both countries from volatile oil markets and supply disruptions. The partnership illustrates how regional energy firms are responding to global tensions by building more resilient and sustainable energy systems.
