Typhoon Champi is moving close to Taiwan and Japan, causing many flight cancellations and affecting a big military drill. It shows how a strong storm can change travel and safety plans quickly.
According to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, Champi had gusts over 227 kph near its center, making it one of the strongest Pacific storms this year. The storm was about 520 km southeast of Taiwan’s southern tip and was forecast to pass northeastern Taiwan, then turn north toward the Chinese coast and into southern Japan.
Taiwan’s transport authorities cancelled 125 flights, mostly domestic, and sent mobile alerts about waves exceeding 6 m and heavy rain in northern mountain areas. In Japan, major carriers Japan Airlines, ANA and Skymark cancelled more than 100 flights, disrupting travel for over 11,000 passengers.
The approaching storm disrupted the Keen Sword military exercise, which involves about 56,000 Japanese, U.S., and allied personnel. The U.S. military said training activities are being adjusted on a day‑to‑day basis for safety.
