The southern province of An Giang is moving early to lock down security for the 2027 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, a major diplomatic event that will bring leaders from 21 economies and about 10,000 delegates to Phu Quoc in November 2027. This preparation is seen as a foundation for both the summit’s safety and the region’s socio‑economic development.
An Giang is advancing 21 key infrastructure projects tied to the event, including 10 public‑investment schemes and 11 public‑private partnership schemes, with total capital exceeding 137.1 trillion VND (≈5.27 billion USD). These projects are intended to showcase Vietnam’s development potential and improve local facilities before the APEC week begins.
Task Force 833 reviewed nearly 400 land‑recovery dossiers and secured 228 voluntary handovers, keeping the 21 projects on schedule. The task force worked directly with Phu Quoc to verify legal status and protect residents’ rights.
Security actions include stepped‑up patrols and a crackdown on a transnational gambling and money‑laundering ring that led to 29 arrests. Community initiatives such as security boat teams, smart surveillance cameras, crime‑free housing and clean‑cyberspace campaigns are also being expanded. Aviation safety measures involve surveying no‑fly zones around Phu Quoc International Airport and Rach Gia Airport, compiling lists of drone operators and tightening oversight of drone‑related businesses.
Col. Nguyen Nhat Truong, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Public Security, said security planning was rolled out early so authorities wouldn’t be caught off guard, and he added that police are working with agencies to intensify efforts against crime, drug offences and high‑tech violations. Tran Minh Khoa, Chairman of the Phu Quoc Special Zone People’s Committee, said the zone is working with agencies, particularly police, to build a comprehensive security posture and to expand the “All People Protect National Security” movement.
