On October 18, a wedding in Tra Lan village, Nghe An province, brought together 1,300 guests. The bride’s mother, Dinh Thi Lieu, 50, turned the festive day into an opportunity to support disadvantaged families, a move that captured many hearts.
Lieu spent almost a year planning every detail, from hiring event organizers to arranging sound and lighting, to ensure her daughter’s celebration was memorable. Although the bride originally wanted a small ceremony, Lieu expanded the marquee and catering so that the venue could welcome the massive crowd.
Her generosity stems from a childhood marked by loss. Lieu lost her father when she was 13, and soon after her eldest brother suffered a severe brain injury, forcing her to quit school after ninth grade and work to support her younger siblings. Those experiences gave her a deep understanding of poverty and hardship.
Over the years Lieu has regularly helped poor families, even giving them money in advance so they could attend weddings without worrying about the cost of a gift. At her daughter’s wedding a local man presented two chi of gold, about 7.5 g, but Lieu asked for his bank details and transferred an equivalent amount of money back to his family, saying she wanted to return the value of the gift.
In September, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Nghe An province honored Lieu for her community contributions. Her story illustrates how personal hardship can inspire lasting acts of generosity that turn a celebration into real support for the needy.
