Europe's Record Summer Heat Claims Tens of Thousands of Lives
Nhiệt kỷ lục mùa hè châu Âu cướp đi hàng vạn sinh mạng

Europe experienced an unprecedented summer heat wave, leading to a staggering number of deaths. Understanding how this heat directly threatens health helps us see why immediate action is needed.
Researchers modeled heat‑related deaths in 854 European cities during June, July and August and recorded 50,391 fatalities, the study said. Of those, 32,619 deaths – about two‑thirds – were attributed to the extra heat caused by human‑driven climate change, according to the upcoming Nature Health paper. The team used statistical modeling that compared a world without climate change to the actual death toll to separate natural heat from climate‑induced heat.
More than half of the deaths were among people aged 85 or older, and over 800 deaths occurred among ages 20‑44, the researchers reported. Lead author Clair Barnes warned that Western and Northern European infrastructure is not built for temperatures up to 21.6 °F (12 °C) above normal.
The same modeling showed that the share of heat‑related deaths caused by climate change has risen from roughly 45 % in the early 2000s to about 65 % today, Barnes explained. Study co‑author Garyfallos Konstantinoudis noted that about one‑third of the deaths occurred during a particularly intense heat wave from June 17 to July 1, when temperatures were 9.5 °F (5.3 °C) above normal. These figures underline how quickly the risk is growing.
Experts such as Dr. Courtney Howard, president‑elect of the Canadian Medical Association, call for urgent heat‑early‑warning systems, equitable access to low‑carbon cooling, and neighborhood support for vulnerable groups. Without these measures, the health and safety of millions across Europe remain in danger.
