Former U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper has urged Vietnamese students to learn foreign languages, develop critical thinking, and explore artificial intelligence as a way to prepare for future careers. His advice is especially relevant as Vietnam’s tech and international sectors grow rapidly.
Knapper said his study of Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese gave him a broader perspective. He added that English can open many doors, but other languages can do the same.
He emphasized that AI will change many fields, but independent thinking, critical analysis and questioning will remain essential. He warned students not to trust online information automatically, because AI can also generate inaccurate content.
The Open Doors 2025 Report recorded 25,584 Vietnamese nationals studying in the United States or in Optional Practical Training during the 2024‑25 academic year, a 15.9 % increase and a record high. About 23 % of them studied business, nearly 22 % computer science and roughly 12 % engineering.
Vietnam aims to train at least 50,000 semiconductor professionals by 2030, and U.S. companies are already investing in semiconductor packaging, testing and engineer training in the country. Knapper encouraged students to consider computer science, chemical engineering and materials science to join this growing industry.
Following Knapper’s guidance—learning additional languages, sharpening critical thinking, and engaging with AI and semiconductor technologies—can give Vietnamese students a competitive edge in the fast‑expanding tech and international job markets. Their choices today will shape tomorrow’s career opportunities.
