Hanoi is turning its historic landmarks into lively, high‑tech venues, a move that is catching the attention of the city’s younger generation. By mixing contemporary art, digital effects and modern staging, the capital is making centuries‑old stories feel relevant today.
Nighttime art programs are now a staple at Hanoi’s historic sites. At the Temple of Literature, a 3D‑mapping light show combined with traditional music draws thousands of visitors each week.
Le Xuan Kieu, director of the Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities at the Temple of Literature – Imperial Academy, explains that contemporary art and digital technology translate heritage without altering its essence. He says the new formats turn a thousand‑year‑old language into the spirit of our times.
Traditional festivals and craft villages have also been reshaped. Fixed time slots and ticketed tours are now common, and artisans collaborate with designers from the UNESCO Creative Cities Network to create artistic cultural gifts for both domestic and export markets.
Heritage is being treated as raw material for the creative economy. The program The Charm of Cheo blends traditional cheo opera with modern staging, allowing younger audiences to appreciate and engage with the art form more easily.
On October 8, the Hanoi Drama Theatre presented The Legend of Hoan Kiem Lake, a production that teaches younger audiences about national hero Le Loi and the lake’s legend. These innovative projects show how art‑tech collaborations can revitalize cultural heritage while generating new revenue streams.
