Singapore has broadened its haze investigation, targeting both overseas and local firms linked to Indonesian fires. Understanding the new steps helps readers see how accountability is being pursued.
The NEA said it has issued notices to ten foreign‑based companies, ordering them to deploy firefighting teams, to cease any burning activities in Indonesia, and to provide details about their connections with associated companies in Indonesia and Singapore. These companies must submit the information within the timeframe set by the agency.
In parallel, the agency is requesting information from ten Singapore‑registered palm‑oil or forestry firms that operate on Indonesian land. The required data cover the firms’ linkages with associated companies, the locations of their land concessions, and any fire‑preventative or firefighting measures they have implemented.
To analyse the submissions, the NEA will review all the information it receives. It will also establish a panel of experts drawn from law firms, audit firms and investigative firms, whose cross‑border investigation experience will support the probe.
Overall, Singapore’s expanded probe combines direct notices, detailed data requests, systematic review and expert assistance to hold companies accountable for activities that fuel regional haze. The approach shows how the city‑state is using regulatory tools to trace and mitigate the sources of transnational fire incidents.
