On 18 October 2026, nearly 300 Vietnamese expatriates gathered in Budapest for Hungary’s first Great National Unity Festival. The event offers a clear example of how a cultural celebration can strengthen community bonds and keep connections to Vietnam alive.

The festival was organized according to guidelines issued on 11 September 2026 by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, which authorise such gatherings abroad. It was held under the patronage of the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary and directly organized by the Vietnamese Women’s Association, with the aim of extending national solidarity beyond Vietnam’s borders.

Participants included Ambassador Bui Le Thai, President Vu Quy Duong of the Vietnamese Association in Hungary, Dr. Phan Bich Thien of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, as well as community members from several generations. Their presence illustrated a unified diaspora community that remains an integral part of the Vietnamese nation.

The festival coincided with Vietnamese Women’s Day on 20 October, highlighting the important role women play in preserving language, customs and community ties. The timing underscored how women help pass Vietnamese culture to younger generations while living abroad.

Overall, the first Great National Unity Festival in Hungary shows how a single event can reinforce national solidarity, preserve cultural identity, and showcase the pivotal contribution of women to the overseas Vietnamese community. It demonstrates that cultural gatherings are vital for keeping diaspora connections to Vietnam strong.
