The Hanoi Department of Construction launched a pilot program to grow climbing and trailing plants on railway pillars, flyover supports, bus shelters and underpass walls. This matters because it can change the look and air of the city.
Steel trellises were put on the three Nguyen Trai railway pillars. The frames have gaps so plants can grow and workers can check the concrete. The pillars are already covered with greenery.
At the Le Van Luong‑Lang Ha flyover, workers cleared old plants and added rows of bamboo along both sides of the approaches. Planting has not started yet at the Le Van Luong‑To Huu underpass, but the plan calls for clusters of plant pots along about 300 meters of wall. The trial also includes bus shelters on Le Thanh Tong, Tran Phu and 69 Ly Thuong Kiet streets.
Resident Hoang Anh Khang said the greening will improve the urban landscape, clean the air and make Hanoi more attractive. Resident Phan Danh Xuan added that more green spaces will soften concrete, create a nature‑connected environment and improve residents’ wellbeing.
