Hue city is speeding up the restoration of several major Nguyen‑dynasty monuments, and many of the works are set to finish well before their original deadlines. This rapid progress highlights Vietnam’s strong commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
The Nam Giao Esplanade project was launched in late 2024 by the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre, with a budget of more than 40 billion VND (about US$1.55 million). Director Phung Van Hoang of the Hue Monuments Project Management Board said the work should be completed in late October or early November 2026, roughly seven months ahead of schedule.
Restoration of Can Chanh Palace began in 2025 as a 200‑billion‑VND programme. Although the original plan extended to April 2029, the palace is now expected to be ready by November 2027, delivering the result well before the deadline.
Thai Mieu’s first phase, a 52‑billion‑VND effort started in October 2024, is slated for completion by late December 2026 – about 20 months earlier than planned. Construction of the main temple will start in the first quarter of 2027, backed by more than 220 billion VND and aimed for a 2031 finish.
To date, Hue has invested nearly 4.8 trillion VND in restoring and embellishing over 200 heritage structures, most within the Complex of Hue Monuments. Between 2026 and 2030 the city intends to launch 27 further projects, with a total projected outlay exceeding 1.59 trillion VND.
These accelerated timelines and sizable budgets demonstrate how Vietnam is rapidly safeguarding its Nguyen‑dynasty legacy. The example set by Hue shows that large‑scale heritage preservation can be achieved efficiently when political will and funding align.
