Feeding Monkeys on Son Tra: Why Tourist Snacks Turn Deadly

Cho khỉ ăn trên Sơn Trà: Vì sao đồ ăn du khách lại nguy hiểm chết người

A recent road‑kill on Son Tra Peninsula has sparked fresh concern about feeding wildlife. The story shows how a simple tourist habit can endanger both animals and people, a lesson for anyone visiting natural sites.

According to Thanh Truc, a witness who photographed the scene, a male monkey was killed after being struck by a vehicle while it was picking up a banana that someone had tossed onto the road to lure it for photographs. The animal died shortly after the impact.

Truc explained that visitors often bring food to the wild monkeys on Son Tra, and this repeated feeding makes the animals leave the forest canopy, walk onto roads and beg for food from passers‑by. The practice therefore increases the risk of traffic accidents.

She also said that feeding bananas and processed foods erodes the monkeys’ natural foraging instincts and can seriously compromise their health. GreenViet Biodiversity Conservation Center warned that such feeding can cause a loss of foraging skills across generations and may lead to domestication.

The Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang Tourism Beaches have installed warning signs and placed staff at popular monkey spots, yet the feeding habit remains widespread. Officials continue to remind tourists that feeding is prohibited.

The incident demonstrates that feeding wild monkeys changes their behavior, puts them in danger of road‑kill and weakens their ability to survive without human help. Visitors should respect wildlife by not offering food.
