The dispute over Chang Yung‑fa’s estate shows how a will can be challenged when a donor’s public statements clash with legal documents. Understanding this case helps anyone planning an inheritance see the steps courts may take.
The Chang Yung‑fa Foundation sued the executors, saying the billionaire had publicly promised to give his wealth to charity. It cited statements from his 2012 autobiography and an audio recording of him speaking to employees.
The sealed will that emerged after Chang’s 2016 death named his youngest son as the sole beneficiary of his more‑than‑$3 billion fortune. Taiwan’s Supreme Court upheld the validity of that will in August 2024, ending an eight‑year legal challenge.
The foundation then sought to add all seven heirs to the lawsuit, arguing that the charitable commitment should be honoured regardless of the will. The executors countered that the will had already been declared valid and that no legally binding donation agreement existed. The court is scheduled to rule on the foundation’s claim on Nov 30.
The case illustrates the practical process of contesting a will in Taiwan: a claim can be filed, additional parties may be added, and both the will’s validity and any alleged charitable promises are examined separately. The upcoming ruling will decide whether the foundation’s charitable claim can override the confirmed will.
