Western Sydney International Airport has opened in Badgerys Creek, about 60 km west of central Sydney. This opening is an important moment for Australia’s aviation.
The new airport will operate 24 hours a day. In contrast, the current Sydney airport can host takeoffs and landings only until 11 p.m. and after 6 a.m.
Prime Minister Albanese said the airport is the first major new airport in Australia in more than 50 years and called it a milestone. It can handle more than 80 million passenger movements each year.
The airport sits on a 1,780‑hectare site that the federal government bought in the 1980s. It was finished in July 2025 after a seven‑year construction and 15 years of planning.
Jetstar scheduled the first outbound passenger flight to the Gold Coast. Cargo flights began at the facility in July.
