Southern Vietnam’s rainy season is forecast to end 15 to 20 days earlier than usual this year, a regional meteorologist said. An earlier finish could bring stronger heat and raise the risk of water shortages during the 2026‑27 dry season.

Le Dinh Quyet, head of the forecasting division at the Southern Regional Hydro‑Meteorological Station, said the southwest monsoon and the intertropical convergence zone are weakening. He added that cold air from northern high‑pressure systems will become more frequent.

The early end is expected in early November for Ben Tre, Hau Giang, Soc Trang and Nha Be in Ho Chi Minh City. Most other provinces and cities in southern Vietnam should see the rainy season finish by mid‑November.

A very strong El Niño is developing and is forecast to peak in November‑December 2026‑27, which means the dry season could be challenging with few off‑season rain events. Hot weather may arrive early, with average temperatures 1.5‑2 °C above the long‑term average and peaks in March‑April; maximum temperatures could reach 39 °C or higher in Bien Hoa and Dong Xoai.

Because of these conditions, the 2027 dry season could bring severe drought and water shortages, according to Le Dinh Quyet. He urged authorities and residents to take measures to prepare for extreme heat and drought.
