Dang Van Bay, a pioneer of shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta, moved from traditional methods to a modern system. His story shows how technology can change a seasonal business into a highly profitable one.
In 2017, Dang Van Bay switched to a closed‑loop high‑tech shrimp farming model. The new layout reduces water‑surface area per hectare to about 1,500 sqm for grow‑out ponds and adds separate nursery, settling and treatment ponds, allowing tighter control of water quality.
Bay covers each pond with a net house. The structure slows temperature swings, which helps keep shrimp healthy and reduces disease risk. Installing a net house over a 1,000‑sqm pond costs about VND50 million.
He allocates most of his 45 ha to off‑season production to avoid competition with other farmers. In 2019 he harvested roughly 300 tons of shrimp, earning about VND20 billion profit; in 2020 production rose to about 350 tons and VND25 billion profit, and the model now yields around VND40 billion net profit each year.
The closed‑loop, high‑tech system lets Bay farm shrimp when most others cannot, control the environment, and achieve far higher yields and earnings than traditional farms. This demonstrates the powerful impact of modern technology on agriculture.
