When Mr. D., a longtime vegetable seller known as Nam D., learned he won a VND10 billion ($380,000) lottery, he left his stall empty so neighbors could take vegetables, fruit and equipment for free. The event happened near Tac Van Market in Ca Mau Province.
A market management representative said the winning tickets were number 729510 and were issued by Kien Giang Lottery Company for the October 25 draw. After hearing the news, Mr. D. and his wife left their stall, which was near the market entrance, unattended. Local residents quickly took the produce and even the weighing scales, baskets and bags.
The representative added that after collecting his prize, Mr. D. bought rice and gave it to people who were struggling financially. He then left to collect the prize and return to his hometown in the former Soc Trang Province. He may use the winnings to build a new life, though it is not clear if he will return to the market.
Mr. D.’s sudden wealth caused him to share his stock and rice with the community before planning a new start at home. His generous act shows how a lottery win can change a person’s behavior.
