The provincial administration in Gia Lai Province is preparing a plan to level Mot Mountain, a site that has long endangered nearby houses. Understanding this plan helps readers see how large‑scale development can affect everyday life.
According to provincial chairman Pham Anh Tuan, the heavily weathered Mot Mountain poses a serious landslide threat to houses on its slopes and at its foot. Recent rains have shown how quickly the mountain can send soil and rocks onto homes, making safety a pressing issue.
The provincial plan, based on a proposal by the Quy Nhon Ward administration, calls for relocating all 228 households in the affected area before any excavation or leveling takes place. This relocation is meant to protect people before the mountain is reshaped to match surrounding ground levels.
Tran Van No, a 48‑year‑old resident at the foot of the mountain, said a storm last year caused soil and rocks to hit the back wall of his house, cracking the wall and supporting pillars. Many households, who earn low incomes from selling lottery tickets, driving motorcycle taxis or doing casual labor, say they need resettlement assistance to afford new accommodation.
Geological and urban‑planning experts have called for a cautious, science‑based approach. They say the relocation of residents should be dealt with separately from any decision to level Mot Mountain.
In short, the project’s impact on safety, housing and livelihoods will depend on how well authorities protect residents and provide adequate resettlement support. Experts stress that any decision to level the mountain must be made independently of the relocation process.
