Vietnam is rapidly approaching a $1 trillion trade turnover, a milestone that highlights the country’s expanding role in global markets. Understanding which products are behind this growth helps explain the strength of its export sector.
Preliminary customs data show that Vietnam’s total trade turnover reached $945.07 billion in the first nine and a half months of 2026, a 31.4 % year‑on‑year rise. Exports were $463.7 billion as of October 15, up 25.9 % YoY.
Computers, electronic products and components were the top export category, worth $135.31 billion and representing 29.2 % of the total export value, according to the customs figures. The second‑largest group, machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts, generated $58.62 billion, a 29 % increase, while phones and components contributed $54.34 billion, up 18.2 %.
Foreign‑invested enterprises played a dominant role, exporting $374.27 billion, which equals 80.7 % of Vietnam’s total export value, as reported by the customs data. Their strong performance underscores the importance of foreign capital in the country’s export engine.
The data make clear that high‑tech electronics and machinery are the main drivers of Vietnam’s export growth, and that foreign‑invested firms account for the vast majority of that success. These sectors will likely continue to shape the nation’s path toward the $1 trillion trade goal.
