United Flight 1681 was flying from Las Vegas to Newark on Oct. 24. A possible hijacking threat made the flight turn back, and the story shows how such an incident can change travel plans.
A flight attendant saw a passenger, identified as Dante Milne, sending a message about hijacking the plane. The attendant told the captain, the crew secured the cockpit, and they decided to return to Las Vegas. The Boeing 737, with 150 passengers and six crew members, landed safely.
After the plane landed, officers detained the passenger without incident. United said the crew had reached its maximum permitted working hours, so the passengers had to stay overnight. A replacement flight left the next morning on Oct. 25 and arrived in Newark more than eight hours late.
The incident shows that a security threat can cause a diversion, overnight stays, and long delays for many travelers. Passengers may have to wait until the next day to reach their destination.
