The World Meteorological Organization reported that the global average concentration of atmospheric CO₂ reached 426.8 ppm in 2025, about 153 % of the pre‑industrial level. This figure rose by 2.8 ppm from the previous year, a larger jump than the decade‑long average. Such a high concentration means the planet is trapping more heat than ever before, which can change everyday weather patterns.
The same WMO report said methane and nitrous oxide also hit record highs in 2025, at 267 % and 126 % of pre‑industrial levels respectively. The agency warned that a powerful El Niño could push greenhouse‑gas concentrations higher this year, adding further risk of extreme conditions.
WMO Deputy Secretary‑General Ko Barrett explained that the rise in gases “supercharges” the ocean and atmosphere. He added that this supercharging means heatwaves, tropical cyclones and rainstorms are intensifying faster than historical baselines prepared us for.
Europe experienced scorching summer temperatures, while Asia suffered devastating floods this year. These events show how rising greenhouse gases already affect everyday life.
The combination of record greenhouse‑gas levels and a strong El Niño is expected to make heatwaves, storms and floods more frequent and severe. Understanding this link helps us see why climate change matters for our health, safety and future plans.
