Doctors at Bach Mai Hospital in northern Vietnam treated a 45‑year‑old man who suddenly felt throat pain while eating instant noodles for breakfast. The incident highlights how an ordinary meal can become a medical emergency when a sharp object is swallowed.
Imaging showed a razor blade had lodged through both walls of his esophagus at the level of the second and third thoracic vertebrae (T2‑T3). X‑ray and CT scans also revealed extensive air leakage into the mediastinum and the base of the neck.
The medical team removed the blade endoscopically under general anesthesia. During the procedure they repaired two opposing tears, each about 2 cm long, in the muscular layer of the esophagus.
Doctors warned that esophageal perforation caused by sharp foreign objects can lead to mediastinitis or a mediastinal abscess, both of which are life‑threatening conditions. Without rapid treatment, such complications often require major surgery and carry a high risk of death.
Prompt diagnosis and the endoscopic repair prevented the need for major surgery and lowered the patient’s risk of death. This outcome shows how immediate medical attention can save lives after swallowing sharp objects.
