Intermittent rains have been falling in Palangkaraya, the capital of Central Kalimantan, while wildfires have raged since August. The rain offers a rare break from the thick haze that has dominated daily life for months, making the story important for anyone watching air‑quality crises.
During the haze, the city’s air‑quality index reached 4,000, more than 13 times the environment ministry’s hazardous threshold. The severe pollution forced health services to treat more than 11,000 people for respiratory infections, highlighting the crisis’s impact on public health.
BMKG official Tri Handoko Seto said the rain caused PM2.5 concentrations to decline, moving the air from ‘hazardous’ toward the ‘unhealthy’ category. Although the index is still in the ‘unhealthy’ range, the downward trend is a clear sign of improvement.
Palangkaraya resident Muhammad Jihan Alwi, 23, used the cleaner air to jog outdoors for the first time in months. He said he felt grateful to breathe fresh air again, showing how quickly the rain changed everyday activities.
These rains demonstrate how a short spell of weather can quickly lower dangerous PM2.5 levels and let residents resume normal outdoor routines. It reminds us that natural changes can provide immediate relief during a haze emergency.
