Vietnam is rapidly exploring a new low‑altitude economy built around drones and other unmanned aircraft. Experts say this sector could reshape jobs, technology and the country’s overall growth.

Nguyen Minh Phuong, deputy director of the Low‑Altitude Space Development Institute under the Vietnam Aerospace Association, noted that the global market for drone services is projected to reach $128 billion by 2030. She also said Vietnam’s low‑altitude economy alone could be worth $10 billion by 2035.

Looking further ahead, Phuong explained that by 2045 the low‑altitude economy is expected to contribute 1.5 % of Vietnam’s GDP, with a localisation rate above 85 %. This would mean most components and services are produced locally.

Phuong added that the sector’s success depends on clearer regulations, stronger domestic technological capabilities, and commercially viable applications. To support this, Vietnam aims to establish three national flight‑testing zones and at least one UAV research and testing centre by 2030.

Nguyen Thi Hai Hang, former director of the Vietnam Aviation Academy, reported that more than 3,000 agricultural drones are already working on about 1.5 million hectares in the Mekong Delta. These drones help farmers with seeding, irrigation and pesticide spraying.

If Vietnam can turn these pilots into profitable businesses, the drone economy could become a key engine of future growth. The sector’s development will therefore be crucial for the country’s long‑term economic diversification.
