Toshisuke Kanazawa is 90 years old and still lifts weights in competitions. He says a simple Japanese diet helps him stay strong and never get sick, so his story can teach us about healthy aging.
On Oct. 30, 2026, Kanazawa competed in the IFBB World Fitness Championships masters category in Santa Susanna, Spain. He was in the group for athletes aged 50 and older.
Kanazawa says he has eaten only brown rice, natto and miso soup since he turned 50. He believes this diet is why he has lived 90 years without ever getting sick.
He says he may try to compete again when he is 93, then he will probably retire. He hopes his example will inspire older people to stay active and try new challenges.
Kanazawa’s story shows that a steady, simple diet and regular training can help people stay healthy as they age. His goal is to be a role model for older generations.
