Two recent deaths from meningococcal disease have been reported in Ca Mau Province, southern Vietnam. Health officials say the cases highlight the need for public awareness about this serious infection.
The Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City warned that the infection can spread in crowded community settings. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Vu Thuong said that 10‑15 % of people carry the bacteria in their throats without showing any symptoms.
Children, adolescents and individuals with weakened immune systems are considered high‑risk groups, according to the institute. These people are more likely to develop severe illness if they become infected.
Health officials said close contacts of a patient should receive preventive antibiotics and be placed under isolation or monitoring for at least ten days. Tran Hien Khoa, director of the Ca Mau Center for Disease Control, added that local authorities are reviewing contacts, surveilling surrounding areas, and organising training programmes to improve community recognition, screening and prevention.
Staying alert to early symptoms and seeking prompt medical care can reduce the chance of severe outcomes. By following the recommended precautions, you can protect yourself and help stop the disease from spreading.
