Final preparations are underway to reopen the main hall of Shuri Castle in November, seven years after the fire that destroyed it in 2019. The reopening is a big event for Okinawa and for visitors who love history.
The restoration of the main hall was finished in September. Now workers are adding interior decorations, guide plates, and new fire‑prevention measures. This work helps the hall look beautiful and stay safe.
The restoration project began in November 2022, and the total cost is estimated at about 12 billion yen. According to the Okinawa prefectural government, about 6.2 billion yen in donations had been received by the end of September and used for interior decoration and preserving traditional artisan techniques. During the work, the hall was fitted with earth leakage circuit breakers, an automatic fire reporting system and sprinklers.
The castle will open to the public on 23 November after a ceremony on 22 November. The new safety systems aim to protect the historic building from future fires.
