Deep inside Lien Hoa (Phong Phu) Cave in Ninh Bình, 18 stone figures of Buddhist Arhats have survived for eight centuries. Their story helps us see how early medieval Buddhism shaped Vietnam’s art and royal life.
According to the Ninh Binh Department of Culture and Sports, the carvings are the only surviving set of 18 Arhat images cut directly into a cave wall in Vietnam, and they belong to the early Tran Dynasty, around the early 13th century. The figures are spread evenly, nine on each side of the limestone wall.
The same department notes that these are the earliest known depictions of Arhats in the country. Because they date from the medieval period, they give scholars a rare glimpse of Buddhist culture and artistic styles of that era.
A rock inscription dated 1246 records that a Buddhist monk linked to the Southern tradition came to Co Phong Mountain, reopened the Bao Phuc sanctuary and carved the 18 Arhats. This activity occurred while the Tran court strongly supported Buddhism, as shown by royal patronage of religious sites.
The carvings are also a rare example of ma nhai, a type of rock inscription that includes the names and places of residence of each Arhat. These details increase both the historical and religious value of the artwork.
Scholars consider the Lien Hoa Arhat carvings valuable historical sources for studying Tran‑Dynasty Buddhist art and the broader development of Vietnamese Buddhist culture. Their preservation allows modern researchers to trace how Buddhist ideas were expressed in medieval Vietnam.
