Bibury’s charm under pressure: how overtourism is reshaping daily life
Bibury chật vật với du lịch quá tải

Bibury, often called England’s most beautiful village, draws thousands of tourists every weekend. The surge of visitors is changing the quiet rhythm that long‑time residents once enjoyed, making the situation worth understanding.
Brian and Jill Skarda said they left their home on Arlington Row after more than 14 years because visitors peered through windows, banged on doors and blocked their access. Their departure highlights how invasive tourism can push families out of historic neighbourhoods.
The Skardas also explained that, on some days, they were virtually unable to get out of their front door or move their car because of the sheer number of tourists. Bibury now attracts up to 20,000 visitors over a weekend, creating crowds that spill onto narrow lanes and residential doorsteps.
Tourists have polluted the River Coln, building makeshift dams, leaving food waste and dirty nappies. The council responded by fencing off sections of the river to protect swans, ducks, fish and other wildlife.
Large tourist coaches regularly block the village’s narrow lanes and threaten the historic Swan Bridge. In response, the parish council has commissioned Oxford Brookes University to study how many tourists Bibury can safely accommodate, aiming to protect both residents and heritage.
