The new iFerret system shows how artificial intelligence can protect aircraft during take‑off and landing. By constantly watching the runway, it catches hazards that human crews might miss.

The partnership announced on Oct. 29 will create a third‑generation version of iFerret, expanding its use across more runways. No completion date has been given yet, but the plan is to broaden deployment.

According to Singapore’s Chinese‑language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao, the upgraded iFerret can identify objects as small as four centimeters with roughly 95% accuracy. It relies on a network of high‑definition cameras placed along the runway, while AI analyses the images to separate real debris from shadows and reflections.

Unlike periodic manual checks, the system runs around the clock, giving airport staff a faster way to spot and remove hazards. Continuous monitoring means dangerous objects are reported almost instantly, not only during scheduled inspections.

An earlier version, introduced in 2009 and upgraded in 2021, reduced false alerts by about 90%, according to NCS. The new generation is expected to improve performance even further, cutting unnecessary alarms while keeping safety high.
