A wedding invitation posted online turned a small Yunnan town into a sudden tourist hotspot, illustrating the power of social media. The story is worth reading because it shows how a single post can reshape a local economy.
According to The Beijing News, nearly 20,000 people traveled to Luowang Town in Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, on Oct. 30 to attend the wedding of 24‑year‑old Xu Chenghong after he invited strangers on social media. Mothership reported that Xu had saved more than 160,000 yuan (US$24,000) for the ceremony but did not have enough relatives to fill the banquet tables.
He posted an invitation on Douyin. The video quickly went viral, and thousands of strangers expressed interest in attending.
China’s Red Star News said local accommodation providers reached 100 % occupancy on Oct. 28 and 29, and nearby hotels were fully booked by Oct. 30. Restaurants also reported a sharp rise in revenue, with some owners comparing the earnings to the busy Lunar New Year period.
Zhang Mai, deputy director of the Zhaotong Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, said the bureau coordinated with 11 counties and districts to prepare for the influx, offered discounted tickets at tourist attractions, and promoted local specialties such as Zhaotong apples and tianma. He added that the sudden number of visitors put pressure on traffic, parking and security arrangements.
The episode demonstrates that a single viral invitation can bring a massive economic boost to a remote community, but it also creates sudden challenges in crowd and traffic management. It highlights both the opportunities and the responsibilities that come with rapid, social‑media‑driven tourism.
