France has just appointed Didier Le Bret as its new ambassador to Vietnam. His personal ties to Vietnam could open new study, work and business chances for Vietnamese people, so it’s worth understanding his plans.

Le Bret explains that his grandmother was Vietnamese and his father was born in Vietnam, which makes him one‑quarter Vietnamese. He believes his Vietnamese heritage can be a "very interesting lever" for developing relations between France and Vietnam. This personal connection, he says, may help build trust on both sides.

Strengthening educational cooperation is a top priority for the ambassador. There are currently about 7,000 Vietnamese students in France, and roughly 1,500 new students travel to France each year, creating many opportunities for academic exchange and future careers.

Le Bret’s roadmap also calls for expanding cooperation in infrastructure and emerging technologies. He mentions projects in quantum technologies, semiconductors and the acceleration of aircraft deliveries already ordered by Vietnam. These sectors could generate new jobs and joint research for Vietnamese professionals.

The ambassador points out that the Vietnamese community in France numbers between 300,000 and 500,000 people and has a very high level of education. He sees this community as an important bridge that can help Vietnamese students, businesses and innovators take advantage of the growing France‑Vietnam partnership.
