An overloaded waste transfer station in Ho Chi Minh City is causing daily problems for nearby people and the environment. Understanding this situation helps residents see how waste‑management issues can affect health and neighbourhood life.
Tuoi Tre reporters saw piles of garbage spilling from the Long Truong waste transfer station onto Truong Luu Street and the roadside fence. A resident who lives and runs a shop there said the rubbish sometimes overflows, inconveniencing nearby businesses and households.
The station is located next to a local market in a densely populated area, meaning many households and businesses are directly exposed. After rain, mud mixes with the rubbish, leaving pools of stagnant water across the site.
Le Thi Phuong, head of the Economic Division of the Long Truong Ward People’s Committee, told a city briefing on October 15 that the station is operating beyond capacity, handling around 180 tonnes of waste per day. The city plans to modernise the facility, raising its capacity to 360 tonnes per day with an investment of VND401.467 billion, and to install enclosed waste‑compaction technology to improve pollution control.
The upgrade aims to reduce overflow, limit stagnant water, and protect the health of residents and the surrounding environment. If completed, the new station should provide cleaner streets and a safer neighbourhood for the community.
