The Metropolitan Police Department in Tokyo plans to introduce a new AI‑based accident reconstruction system. This development matters because it could change how quickly and accurately traffic crashes are investigated, affecting daily commuters and city traffic flow.
The new tool will blend artificial intelligence with 3D spatial data taken from the crash site and video from nearby security cameras. By doing so, it hopes to cut down long on‑site inspections that force traffic restrictions, create congestion and cause economic losses.
The system will use an existing mobile‑mapping platform where specially equipped vehicles drive around accident locations, capturing the surroundings with cameras to produce detailed 3D spatial data. This data forms the digital foundation for the AI analysis.
Investigators will be able to extract key details such as vehicle speed, distance between cars and their exact positions on a screen. The software also lets them run simulations from several angles, including overhead views and the perspectives of drivers or pedestrians, making report preparation easier.
In short, the AI‑driven reconstruction system promises faster, more precise accident analysis while reducing the need for disruptive on‑site inspections. If successful, it could lessen traffic jams and lower the economic impact of crash investigations.
