Google announced a $15 billion investment in data‑center facilities in Malaysia, to be carried out during 2027‑2028. The project expands on a $2 billion spend that the company revealed in 2024, and it is being billed as a major boost for the country’s digital economy.
Google said the $15 billion spend will be made over 2027‑2028, building on a $2 billion investment announced in 2024. The funds will finance several new data‑center campuses in Malaysian industrial zones.
Google also said the new facilities are expected to sustain more than 9,000 local jobs each year, with average wages about 45 % higher than the national median. This suggests many well‑paid positions in construction, operations and technical support. The company highlighted the potential for long‑term employment growth.
In its statement, Google pledged to add more than one gigawatt of clean‑energy capacity to the national grid and to bolster local water security. The company described the campuses as energy‑efficient, aiming to reduce the strain on Malaysia’s power and water supplies.
According to market‑intelligence firm DC Byte, Malaysia – the third‑richest Southeast Asian nation by nominal GDP per capita – holds over half of the region’s under‑construction data‑center capacity. The deputy prime minister told parliament that by 2035 data centres could consume one‑third of Malaysia’s total energy, raising environmental concerns. In October, a Finnish authority ordered work on two of Google’s sites to stop until mandatory environmental impact assessments are completed.
The investment could bring many high‑pay jobs and increase clean‑energy supply, but the projected energy demand and pending environmental reviews mean the project’s impact will be closely monitored. Malaysians will likely feel both the economic benefits and the environmental challenges of the new data centres.
