The Vietnamese government is building an international financial centre in Ho Chi Minh City to draw foreign money and support the country’s fast‑growing economy. Understanding how this hub works helps explain its potential impact on Vietnam and its neighbours.

Ho Chi Minh City recently climbed 17 spots in the Global Financial Centers Index, now sitting at 67th place. The jump reflects growing confidence in Vietnam’s financial reforms.

Ashley Zhang, Asia‑Pacific regional head at the Institute of International Finance, said an international financial centre should attract global capital, strengthen regional connectivity, and address gaps in currency‑related services. She added that the centre should complement, not compete with, Singapore by focusing on regional connectivity and multicurrency structures.

Richard D. McClellan, CEO of VIFC‑HCMC, said the centre aims to develop the financial infrastructure needed to coordinate and process capital flows worth hundreds of billions of U.S. dollars over the next five to ten years. By linking domestic projects with international investors, the hub can channel large sums of money into Vietnam’s growth sectors.

Experts at the Fortune Southeast Asia 500 Summit stressed that Vietnam must strengthen its institutional framework, governance, transparency, and regulatory standards to meet investor expectations. Without these improvements, the new hub may struggle to attract the capital it needs.
