The Ban Co traffic police team has warned Ho Chi Minh City pedestrians after two recent fatal accidents involving jaywalkers. Understanding these risks can help anyone who walks on busy streets stay safe.
On August 16, a collision on Ly Thuong Kiet Street in Minh Phung Ward killed one person and injured another, according to the police. A second crash on October 22 on Su Van Hanh Street in Hoa Hung Ward also involved a jaywalker and left one person dead.
Police stress that crossing outside designated points puts pedestrians at risk and can force drivers to brake suddenly or swerve, which may trigger chain‑reaction crashes involving multiple vehicles. Such sudden maneuvers increase the chance of multi‑vehicle pile‑ups, endangering both walkers and drivers.
The police have observed pedestrians climbing over road medians even though a legal crossing point is less than 20 meters away. To reduce such behaviour, the Ban Co traffic police team will increase public awareness, add crosswalk and speed‑reduction markings, and strengthen inspections.
Under Government Decree 168/2024, illegal crossing can be fined VND150,000–250,000 (US$6–10) and may lead to criminal prosecution if the violation causes serious harm. Pedestrians should therefore choose the legal crossing point, even if it is only a short distance away.
