A new Skyscanner report shows three Southeast Asian places are getting more visitors before they become famous. The report draws on insights from more than 28,000 travelers worldwide.
Travelers are increasingly shaping holidays around personal interests, the report says. Global travel trends include disconnecting from screens, discovering local music scenes, seeking exclusive souvenirs, and keeping fitness routines while away. In Sandakan, Malaysian Borneo, visitors can see orangutans at the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre, visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center, walk rainforest trails, walk a canopy walkway, join night walks, and take wildlife river safaris in the Lower Kinabatangan region. The Sabah Tourism Board says fresh seafood is also available.
In Brunei’s capital Bandar Seri Begawan, visitors can ride boats on the Brunei River to see the historic stilt‑house settlement Kampong Ayer. They can walk wooden walkways, visit the Cultural and Tourism Gallery, see Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the Royal Regalia Museum, and try food at Gadong Night Market, according to Brunei Tourism.
Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam mixes white‑sand beaches with nature activities. Vietnam’s official tourism website highlights snorkeling around the An Thoi archipelago, kayaking on the Cua Can River, forest walks, fresh seafood, and farm tours that show local food and everyday life.
These three spots match the new travel trends of personal interest, nature, culture and food, so they are becoming hot travel spots before they go mainstream. Travelers looking for unique experiences may want to visit them soon.
