Tom Laperche’s victory in the Route du Rhum made headlines because it combined a record‑breaking time with a debut performance. The French skipper’s achievement shows how a single race can turn a lifelong dream into history.
The 29‑year‑old finished the trans‑Atlantic solo race in 6 days, 13 hours, 27 minutes. His time broke the previous record set by Charles Caudrelier in 2022 by about six hours and 20 minutes, establishing a new benchmark for the event.
Laperche sailed the Ultim trimaran SVR Lazartigue, a boat designed by François Gabart and launched in 2021. He led the fleet alone for several days, skillfully handling headwinds, tropical lows, squalls and thunderstorms that threatened the crossing.
During the race, competitor Armel Le Cléac'h capsized and was rescued by a Panamanian cargo ship. Because Laperche temporarily diverted to aid the distressed sailor, he received a one‑hour‑two‑minute time bonus, and, as Franck Cammas noted, the incident shifted the race’s focus toward risk management rather than pure speed.
Laperche said the victory fulfilled a childhood dream. His father had finished fourth in the 2010 Route du Rhum, and the young sailor grew up sailing in Morbihan.
