Japan Football Association honorary president Kozo Tashima announced on Thursday that he will run in next year's FIFA presidential election, becoming the first Japanese candidate for the role. His decision is notable because he is challenging incumbent Gianni Infantino, who is seeking a fourth term.
Tashima said FIFA's biggest problem is governance and outlined a platform to reform the body. He wants to keep what works and change what does not.
To appear on the ballot, Tashima must obtain nominations from five national associations. He has already spoken with officials from eight countries and hopes to secure the backing of at least six associations.
All candidates must submit their nominations by November 18. Infantino, who is running for a fourth term, is well placed among the organisation's 211 member associations.
Tashima rates his chance of unseating Infantino at 20% to 30%, but he hopes the campaign will raise his confidence. His main motivation is to change FIFA’s governance, which he believes is the sport’s biggest problem.
