The latest QS Asia university rankings show a clear shift in regional academic power. Chinese institutions are moving up while Singapore’s top schools are falling, a trend that signals where future research and career opportunities may concentrate.

Tsinghua University rose six places to third overall, a jump driven by strong research output, high‑impact collaborations and a focus on artificial intelligence, computer science, materials science, architecture and environmental technology, according to QS. The university also earned a perfect 100 for both academic reputation and employer reputation, and near‑perfect scores for research citations and international research networks.

Singapore’s National University of Singapore slipped three places to tie for sixth, and Nanyang Technological University fell five spots to eighth, marking the first time since 2011 that no Singapore university appears in Asia’s top five, the QS rankings show. The decline is linked to a relative drop in citations per paper when compared with rapidly improving rivals in Hong Kong and mainland China.

QS evaluates universities with 11 indicators; academic reputation accounts for 30% of the score, employer reputation 20%, while research citations and internationalisation are also weighted factors. These metrics determine how each university’s performance is reflected in the final ranking.
