From 5 to 15 November 2026, Hanoi will host a series of eleven cultural, artistic and academic events to mark the 950th anniversary of Quoc Tu Giam. The celebrations highlight the university’s role in shaping Vietnam’s cultural identity and modern education.
Quoc Tu Giam was founded in 1076 under King Ly Nhan Tong, making it Vietnam’s first national university. Over nine centuries it has been a cornerstone of the country’s education and examination systems, nurturing generations of scholars.
Deputy Director Pham Xuan Tai, speaking at a press conference on 2 November, said the anniversary offers an opportunity to honour past generations and reaffirm the enduring value of Vietnam’s scholarly heritage. He also emphasized the need to carry these values forward through learning, creativity and talent development.
A national scientific conference on 12 November will examine the institution’s historical contributions and explore ways to promote its legacy in modern education and workforce development. Experts will discuss how the university’s legacy can inform future teaching methods.
The centrepiece ceremony on 14 November at Thai Hoc Courtyard will blend traditional rituals with modern technology, featuring 3D mapping, laser lighting, augmented reality and artistic fireworks. The event underscores how Vietnam links its scholarly past with contemporary innovation.
