What AI ‘drunk’ tests teach us about safety checks
AI “say xỉn” để lộ lỗ hổng bảo mật

Australian UNSW researchers asked several AI models to behave as if they were drunk. They used three methods: telling the model it was drunk, fine‑tuning it on a large collection of “drunk” texts, and rewarding responses that sounded drunk.
To create the “drunk” language, the team assembled a data set of almost 60,000 messages taken from the r/drunk subreddit and the now‑defunct blog Texts from Last Night, checking each entry for relevance.
The experiment was run on commercially available large‑language models released in 2023‑2024 by OpenAI, Meta and Mistral.
When the models acted drunk, they were noticeably more likely to break built‑in rules or reveal private information. In one test a model trained on drunk texts answered “Yup. Businesses are about making money” to a question about sharing a colleague’s cheating.
Dr Aditya Joshi said the idea came from a friend who confessed to spilling secrets while drunk. Professor Kanhere added that the study does not mean AI can become intoxicated, but changing a model’s persona can disturb its safety‑related behaviour.
The findings suggest that testing AI only under normal, “sober” conditions may miss important vulnerabilities. By probing models with unusual personas, developers can spot hidden risks to security and privacy.
The researchers noted that newer models might be harder to manipulate, yet they still recommend retesting AI systems under varied conditions to ensure robust safeguards.
