Sun‑rich Singapore, yet Vitamin D deficiency thrives: unraveling the hidden causes
Nắng Singapore không đủ để phòng thiếu vitamin D

According to the 2010 National Health Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, about 40 % of Singaporeans are deficient in Vitamin D and 8 % are very deficient, a striking figure for a nation bathed in year‑round sunlight.
UVB radiation, the narrow band of sunlight that catalyses the skin’s synthesis of Vitamin D, is most potent during mid‑morning to early afternoon. When the skin is exposed, a photochemical cascade converts 7‑dehydrocholesterol into pre‑Vitamin D, which the liver and kidneys later transform into the circulating 25‑hydroxyvitamin D measured in blood tests.
"Urban planning—sheltered walkways, underground passages, air‑conditioning and office hours—keeps people away from the UVB‑rich part of the day," said Dr Stephen Chu, the founder and medical director of Aquila Medical Center. He notes that a typical commute can involve moving from flat to car park to office to mall without ever stepping into direct sunlight.
A 2019 study involving 213 indoor workers found nearly 33 % of the participants were Vitamin D deficient, underscoring how office‑centred routines curtail exposure to the UVB window despite comparable dietary intake of the vitamin.
A 2013 study of 197 Singaporean women showed deficiency rates of 89 % in Malay women, 82 % in Indian women, and 56 % in Chinese women, highlighting the role of skin pigmentation in attenuating UVB‑induced synthesis.
Around 54 % of females are Vitamin D deficient compared with roughly 30 % of males, partly due to cultural practices that limit sun exposure.
These intertwined factors—urban design, indoor occupations, melanin levels, and gendered lifestyle choices—explain why sunshine alone does not guarantee adequate Vitamin D, and they signal a public‑health challenge that warrants targeted awareness and intervention.
