Inside IceCube: How a Giant Antarctic Ice Cube Detects Ghostly Neutrinos

On Oct. 6, 2026 the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that physicist Francis Halzen had won the Nobel Prize in Physics. The jury said he was honored “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high‑energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.”

The Academy described IceCube as “a cubic kilometer of ice that is equipped with light sensors.” Professor Eva Olsson, a member of the Nobel Committee for Physics, called it “a giant ice cube positioned at the South Pole… that enables the detection of neutrinos.”

IceCube works by embedding thousands of digital optical modules deep within the clear Antarctic ice. When a high‑energy neutrino passes through the ice, it occasionally collides with an atomic nucleus, creating a brief flash of Cherenkov light. The surrounding sensors record the flash, and computers reconstruct the particle’s direction and energy.

Using this method, researchers can capture neutrinos that come from “extremely energy‑rich processes in the distant universe,” such as exploding stars or supermassive black holes. These particles carry information that cannot be obtained by ordinary telescopes.

Halzen, 82, was born in Tienen, Belgium and is a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He has been working on detecting neutrinos in South Pole ice since the 1980s, a long‑term effort that finally led to the Nobel‑winning discovery.

The ability to observe high‑energy neutrinos opens a new window on the cosmos, allowing scientists to study violent events far beyond our galaxy and to test fundamental physics under extreme conditions.
